Maintain Radio Silence
In the previous entry, several people noted that I haven't written in a while, and they are right.  I apologize for the lack of updates, but I haven't really had much to say lately, because I haven't worked on the game too much recently.  Mainly the reason is because I got a new full-time job, which doesn't leave me with as much time to work on Case 8 as I would like.  However, I am doing my best to get back into it and get things done.

Having said that, I guess it's time for a status report, of sorts:

The game is, in my estimation, about 30% complete.  I don't know when it will be finished, but I'm very much aiming to have it out this year.  Realistically, it will probably be anywhere in the range of Fall/Winter.  Someone on my forums guessed Christmas 2009, and I think that would be as appropriate a date as any, so I'm going to do my best to shoot for that goal.

So I'm also going to do my best to update this journal more often.  Of course, for that I need input from you, the readers.  What do you want to know?  Do you prefer a screenshot here or there, maybe a teaser image?  A full report on what I coded a specific day?  Voice/music clips when we get there?  Obviously I don't want to spoil anything, but I promise I will give you guys what you want as much as I'm able to.

Thanks a lot for the info regarding the game status, Grundislav! It was me who did the Christmas guess on your forums. Most of us fans don't mind waiting as long as it takes until the game is done, especially when you give us some updates about the progress now and then. So again thanks for reacting so promptly to our inquiries.

One thing I would like to know: can you tell us anything about the music in BJ8 yet? Will it again be composed by the talentend Peter Gresser? I loved the music in Case 7.

thanks for finally updating. i know that you dont want to give all the details, but maybe you could tell us small things like how much of the work is finished or maybe giving us a teaser trailer when you are close to finishing the game, like in case 7. a teaser image sounds ok too. we don't mind waiting for the game as long as you update when you can.

Re: Ways to Die in Case 8
I'm not sure yet. So far there are 2 I've already scripted. I'll know for sure when the game nears completion.

Let me tell you a story.

One of the many joys in my life short life of 21 years has been reaching certain milestones and finding a new Ben Jordan game is out. I first got into the Ben Jordan games shortly after splitting up with a girlfriend. Hours of trawling the internet to find something to do with all my free time led me to AGS and on to the world of Ben Jordan. Fast forward a year and I'm spending the majority of my days working a very dull summer job. Once again to relieve the tension Ben Jordan is there with a jaunt to Japan (I HATE ZOMBIES WHY GRUNDISLAV WHY??). Another year and I'm desperately revising every minute that God sends to try and pass my final exams for University. In a moment of weakness I ask "I wonder how that series of games about the ginger kid is doing?" and I lose again. New year, new Masters course, new girlfriend everything's going great and then, in one of those weird moments I play and find that you killed off Ben. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I cry! There was a small chance that a British character wouldn't have to be the bad guy but curses, you had to kill him off didn't you? *Sighs* I guess after enslaving a third of the globe and having poor dental hygiene it's just fate that us Brits will have to play the bad guys FOR EVER AND EVER (ok, Quincy might be alright, but my jury is still out on him)!

Cut a long story short please don't rush the next Ben Jordan game. I kinda love the fact that whenever there's a pause or void in my life, whenever I least expect it, there's a new and brilliant game for me to rabidly drool over and enjoy every minute of for a few days. Take your time, it will be done when it's done and I'll be happy several months after it's released when I have one of those "I wonder what Ben Jordan is upto" moments. Having it any other way just wouldn't be as special. Right, back to lurking...

I was going to post a comment on your previous entry, but I really didn't have much to say.

I'm a bit disappointed that you're aiming for a late 2009 release. I was kind of hoping you'll get the game out by the Summer. And personally, I'd prefer a full report of what all you've done since the last update.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

You've previously said that there will be four different endings. Will there be an obvious 'best ending', or will there never be an official 'one true ending'? Since this is going to be the ultimate, final end of the series forever, I'd actually prefer the latter.
BJ4U: The Ben Jordan Developer Diarybj4u on April 17th, 2009 09:50 pm (UTC)
There are four endings, one "happy" ending, one "bittersweet," one "sad but optimistic," and one "depressing." Since you as the player can get any of these, you can pick which one you like best as the "true" ending. However, it all depends on how you play. As you said, since there aren't going to be any more Ben Jordan games, any of the 4 can be considered the actual ending.

It's nice that you keep in touch with the people that play your games. My girlfriend and I are looking forward to the new Ben Jordan! Thanks for putting in all the work.

Best wishes from the Netherlands,

grundislav, will there be different points for each ending
BJ4U: The Ben Jordan Developer Diarybj4u on April 18th, 2009 03:39 pm (UTC)
No, I don't think so. You'll still be able to get a full score and get any of the 4 endings. I'm actually considering not having a score in this last game, just because it doesn't really serve any purpose. Plus, I'm having difficulty finding an appropriate score noise.
(Anonymous) on April 18th, 2009 04:41 pm (UTC)
Ahh, please keep the score in the game Grundislav! Ben Jordan games wouldn't be the same without it. It's a great way of keeping track of your progress, and so satififying when you solve another puzzle and hear the jingle. Plus the different score jingles give each game such an unique feeling. Surely you'll find a fitting one for the last game, even if its just something like a generic harp noise.

What about the length of the game? Will it be roughly the same as the previous one in terms of expected play time and number of rooms?
BJ4U: The Ben Jordan Developer Diarybj4u on April 18th, 2009 03:41 pm (UTC)
The way I imagine, it will be a little longer just because of the fact you're playing two characters and two stories, but I've found that no matter how long I think the game is going to be, it always ends up being as long or shorter than what I expected. It will probably be about the same length as Case 7, but we'll see.

Sounds good to me, I felt that case 7 was rather well paced. Will Ben's story dominate the game or will there be closer to a 50/50 split between the two storylines?
BJ4U: The Ben Jordan Developer Diarybj4u on April 19th, 2009 06:06 am (UTC)
More of a 40/60 split, with Ben's dominant. The other story is two playable sections.
