An Open Letter
It's February 28th, i.e. the end of February, and yes, I know, the BJ2 Remake still isn't out.

Let me preface this by saying that I appreciate everyone's support, and the fact that people play and enjoy my games.  It's flattering to know that people eagerly anticipate the release of new games in the series, and I am grateful to everyone for the kind words and enthusiasm.

Now, I'd like to make something clear, and that is the difference between a goal and a deadline.  When I said the end of February, I said my goal was the end of February.  I didn't give a specific release date, because there's really no way I can predict one, short of completing the game and then holding out on releasing it just to comply with the set date.

The fact is, with a full-time job and reliance on other people who are doing me the favor of helping with my hobby for free, there's no way I can impose a deadline.  If the games were commercial, that would be another story.  However, since I can only work on the games at certain moments, and since the people who help me also have their own lives and jobs and loved ones, it would be unfair of me to be down people's throats to get it all done because, in the end, it's just an unnecessary little side project done for fun.

So again, I'm sorry I didn't meet my goal.  Hopefully the game will be out very soon, but until it is, all I can ask for is your patience.

Couldn’t you publish the game without voices and then give us the voices later?

While I'd argue that the Ben Jordan games are much more than just a unnecessary side hobby (look at the many hard core fans you have Grundy! :)), the fact is that the games don't cost money and are developed in Grundislav' free time. So yeah, nagging about deadlines will not help in the least. I'm content with that as long as the series will be finished, be it this year or next or - lets hope not :) - in five years.

For those who cannot wait: try to do some other things in the mean time. Play some other (AGS) games. There are a lot of gems out there. Watch some movies you always wanted to see. Do some sports. Or start developing your own game. No matter if you are good, practice will get you somewhere. While waiting for Ben Jordan Case 8 I started my first own game project last summer; now I have a little team of my own and hope to release the finished game in a few months. What I want to say: try doing something productive or what you like, and you will see how time flies by. The time to the next Ben Jordan will go so much faster!

"try doing something productive"
"I started my first own game"

Dohohohohoho...

Well, sorry if that came across as overly pompous, I didn't intend it that way. I can only tell what's working for me, doesn't mean is has to work for everybody else. You can laugh all you want though - I work on project for my own enjoyment and its coming along just fine. You won't have to play it, I promise.

But IMHO, besides it's obvious entertainment value, Grundy's work SHOULD also be an inspiration to his fans. It shows what's possible to achieve as a little private side project if you only try. Doesn't even have to be game making, you know.

Worth The Wait
I totally agree, we can wait a bit longer. Projects like these take a lot of time. BJ has motivated me to start working on a game of my own in my spare time.

Quality is always worth waiting for.

Don't worry Grundy, I'm sure the last will be great!

Oh, too bad... I'd love to play the games - BJ2 Deluxe and BJ8 - right now. Anyway, it's a free series (and a great one, by the way), so I'm sure everybody's really grateful. Thanks a lot, and please take your time!

?
Who was it, Grundy? I'll get 'em for ya!
(Anonymous) on March 2nd, 2010 05:10 pm (UTC)
Ummm....
Uh... why did you delete my letter of apology, Grundy? That's not very nice.

Re: Ummm....
I deleted it because it was causing negative comments from others, and we can do without that here.

Ah. Well, I hope I didn't offend you. Thanks.

Stupot
No need to explain yourself man.
A few more updates would go down a treat though :-)

You've got my patience!

Just waiting impatiently for BJ8 then! Keep going!

I really look forward to play it. Thanks for all your nice work, Grundi!

Thank you!!!!
ok. I must Admit, I am a new Ben Jordan fan. I started playing a couple of months ago, and have already finished. What a fantastic cliff hanger ending in case 7, it's left me wanting more!

I just wanted the chance to quickly say thank you for all your hard work, the games are so enjoyable, and very, very addictive. Ben Jordan is up there with my fav strategy game - ( The Monkey island series. )

:) so thanks again. You are a legend!

Also have you set another possible goal for the completion of BJ2? or BJ8?
Im sure both will be worth the wait.

For once, not me.

Damn it, Grundy, the suspence is killing me! A new date, please?

- Tom S. Fox
BJ4U: The Ben Jordan Developer Diarybj4u on March 21st, 2010 08:19 pm (UTC)
Sorry, no new dates. If I announce a date and then fail to meet it, people will get upset/feel betrayed/etc and I'd rather not have to deal with that anymore.
(Anonymous) on March 25th, 2010 07:14 am (UTC)
That’s funny, I can’t remember having written that, and I would spell it ”suspense.“ Is someone impersonating me?
(Anonymous) on April 2nd, 2010 05:45 pm (UTC)
Gulp. Caught red handed.
(Anonymous) on September 5th, 2010 06:44 pm (UTC)
That's not nice, Anon. shame on you!
(Anonymous) on March 22nd, 2010 06:40 pm (UTC)
Fair 'nuf.
(Anonymous) on March 24th, 2010 07:28 pm (UTC)
Why?
Yeah, that's all fine and dandy, but could you please tell us why almost two months ago you informed us you were 'almost done' with only two more animations, some music and voices left to do, but we're still not getting that precious, precious zip file?

I don't wanna bitch, and I appreciate your domestic needs, I'm just curious. Take as long as you want.As Shigeru Miyamoto once said 'A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.'
BJ4U: The Ben Jordan Developer Diarybj4u on March 24th, 2010 08:53 pm (UTC)
Re: Why?
Because as I said in my post, I don't do everything. Other people help me with voices and music. I may be done with the game, but if other people who have their own lives and priorities can't send me things right away, I have no choice but to wait. I'm not going to pressure them because, as I said, they're doing me a huge favor, and the only way I'm compensating them is with my thanks.
